January 7, 1989
In January 1989, the foundation began to be laid for the explosion of the MegaPowers at WrestleMania V. On this particular episode of Saturday Night's Main Event, Hulk Hogan took on "The African Dream" Akeem in a one on one contest. The only problem was that "one on one" didn't really apply. In Akeem's corner were his tag team partner, the Big Bossman and their manager, "The Doctor of Style" Slick. In the Hulksters corner was his manager, Miss Elizabeth. Randy Savage, on the other hand, decided to watch the match in the locker room area with Mean Gene Okerlund.
The match was a fierce battle as the two men took turns with the upper hand. At one point in the match, the referee was pulled in front of an offensive move by Hogan. The enabled the Big Bossman to quickly interfere in the match. As the Twin Towers took turns splashing Hogan, Elizabeth fled to the backstage area to seek help from The Macho Man. After finding Savage in the locker room, it became apparent to Elizabeth that Savage had no intention of going to the ring. Dismayed, Elizabeth ran back out to ringside to support Hogan in his effort against the two big men. Hogan was able to gain the upper hand before being thwarted by a whack to the back with Bossman's nightstick. This resulted in a disqualification win for Hogan, however the damage was not done.
After laying Hogan out in the middle of the ring, the attention of the Twin Towers swiftly turned toward Elizabeth, who had entered the ring. The Big Bossman seized Elizabeth by the arm and handcuffed her. In no time at all, Savage was on his way to the ring wielding a steel chair. Savage was able to quickly gain control of the situation and free Elizabeth from harm. In turn, Elizabeth immediately saw to the well being of Hulk Hogan. This quickly brought about the ire of Randy Savage as he looked on in bewilderment. Savage pulled Elizabeth to the side and began to question her. After speaking briefly with Savage, Liz turned her attention back to Hogan before being more forcefully flung to the center of the ring. Again, Elizabeth argued with Savage before leaving him in the ring to attend to Hogan. In the coming weeks it would be made abundantly clear that all was not well in the MegaPowers camp.
